La música puede contribuir considerablemente en la regulación del estrés y en la recuperación del bienestar en el ser humano, que se enfrenta día a día a situaciones de presión, carga, solución constante de problemas y muchos temores, como los que vivimos en la situación actual de pandemia.

De acuerdo al diccionario de la Real Academia española (RAE) la música es: “Melodía, ritmo y armonía combinados”.

Para otros autores es un conjunto de sonidos sucesivos combinados, que generalmente producen un efecto estético o expresivo, aunque no necesariamente debe ser simétrico, agradable o rítmico para el oído (como todo arte), sino que permite al ser humano sensibilizarlo ante lo que escucha.

Las investigaciones en neurociencias indican que nuestro cerebro procesa la música mediante redes neuronales que involucran áreas de procesamiento auditivo y motor (movimiento).

Paralelamente su percepción y ejecución (cantar o tocar algún instrumento musical) involucran diversas funciones cognitivas: atención, concentración, y memoria.

Gran parte de nuestro cerebro está involucrado en el procesamiento musical, sin embargo hay algunas estructuras cerebrales que tienen un papel preponderante:

  • La corteza prefrontal medial actúa en el aprendizaje de las estructuras musicales, recuerda y procesa los tonos.
  • El lóbulo temporal derecho es responsable del procesamiento básico del sonido, separa la armonía musical de otros estímulos auditivos.
  • El sistema límbico percibe las emociones (rabia, tristeza, miedo, amor y alegría). Se comunica con el lóbulo temporal y por ello la música tiene impacto en los sentimientos.

Escuchar música es un proceso complicado y profundo a nivel cerebral; pero tocar un instrumento musical es todavía más complejo ya que en su ejecución necesitamos de la activación de gran parte de las estructuras cerebrales.

La música es un tipo de lenguaje orientado a evocar, comunicar y reforzar diversas emociones.

Tiene la capacidad de provocar en nosotros respuestas emocionales positivas o negativas con distinta intensidad, dependiendo del ritmo, tono, timbre y melodía de la música que escojamos.

Cuando la música es placentera, se activan en el cerebro sistemas de recompensa similares a los estímulos sexuales o ingesta de comida, se libera el neurotransmisor dopamina que cumple funciones de llevar a experiencias o sentimientos de placer.

Hay evidencia científica de que la música agradable puede ayudar a disminuir los niveles de cortisol (hormona del estrés).

Los estudios de los efectos de la música en la salud del individuo,  han determinado que ésta puede colaborar en la salud mental, rehabilitación y manejo complementario de algunas enfermedades como:

  • La hipertensión arterial
  • Los accidentes cerebrovasculares (cuando se pierde el habla, muchos aún pueden cantar y por allí se empieza a estimular ésta y otras funciones perdidas)
  • La ansiedad
  • Los síntomas depresivos
  • La demencia (evoca recuerdos o calma la agitación o agresividad)

Y se han reportado avances relevantes en pacientes con espectro autista (mejora respuestas sociales, capacidad de atención y habilidades de comunicación).

Existe un estudio científico donde se evidencia mejoría en la calidad del sueño de los adolescentes (música clásica relajante antes de dormir).

También se ha encontrado que la música ayuda en el manejo de:

  • Dolor
  • Estrés
  • Disminuye la frecuencia cardíaca, respiratoria y la tensión muscular
  • Mejora el estado de ánimo y el sentido del humor
  • Estimula del movimiento
  • Aumenta la calidad del ejercicio

Favorece la memoria (por elementos repetitivos de ritmo y melodía), las funciones cognitivas y, la neuroplasticidad cerebral (recuperación de las neuronas y vías nerviosas). Facilita la socialización, la comunicación, la expresión de las emociones y sentimientos, calma a bebés prematuros y recién nacidos (canciones de cuna en vivo).

La música nos permite relajarnos o activarnos según sea el caso que necesitemos, por eso debemos escoger el tipo de música que queremos escuchar o interpretar (ritmos lentos o rápidos, tonos bajos o altos) de acuerdo a la necesidad física y psicológica que tenemos para el momento.

También evoca vivencias de tipo religioso o espiritual, facilita la meditación con todos los beneficios ya conocidos, ayuda a recuperar la paz y la armonía, relaja la tensión de los ambientes y situaciones de crisis, puede mejorar la calidad de tu ejercicio físico y tu rendimiento laboral.

Así que, baila, canta, aprende a tocar un instrumento musical; muévete al ritmo de la música, crea una canción nueva (haz música tú mismo) o escucha música que nunca has oído y también música conocida que te reconforte y evoque recuerdos agradables y emociones positivas, participa en actividades musicales (coros, orquestas, conciertos).

Muévete al ritmo de la música, no sólo harás un ejercicio físico con todos sus beneficios sino que encontrarás una forma divertida de estimular, relajar o recuperar tu cerebro, dándote un permiso para disfrutar la vida en bienestar.
